We of course said sure! We love helping people!
As we start inspecting the server, we find that it had mirrored hard drives. Great, except that the second drive hadn’t been working as an active mirror since 2005. The primary drive in the mirror was not in good shape, but we were able to recover the data, however we were not able to bring it back to life and simply reboot.
Now alot of you are saying well, restore from backup! The problem here is that there was no backup, and this is alot more common than alot of you think.
System monitoring on any scale is a great thing and can prevent problems such as this. If you can’t monitor something as critical as your mirrored hard drives, get a system that allows this, the same suggestion applies for your backups, if you can’t confirm each and everyday that your backups are complete, you risk putting yourself into a similar situation with road to recovery.
In the case of this customer we were able to recover their important data and they are now happy subscribers to offsite backup.
