SSD drives are nothing new. However the way they are packaged and put into our computers is changing. The SSD drive on the left looks more like RAM than a hard drive. A few months ago there was another one that plugs into a PCIe slot (typically used for modems, network cards, TV cards and things of that nature).
The 64GB and 128GB modules are only 2.2mm tall, while the double-stacked 256GB option is 3.7mm in height, and all three can reach speeds of 220MBps while reading or 180MBps when writing – Engadget
To help you get a grasp on the speed, a super fast laptop drive last year was only half that speed at best.
This is what they are using in the new 11″ and 13″ MacBook Air. That is how they got them so slim. Unfortunately these won’t be compatible with what we now have (unless you have a brand new MacBook Air) as they will not fit in today laptops. I don’t imagine it will be long before these will be in every laptop in the stores.
