The future is going to be a very fast place if these become the norm. All technology is pricey when it first comes out, and this are no exception. At $11,500 it isn’t exactly within many peoples budget. Now, pick up your jaw, and let me explain why these are so expensive, and why I would be willing to pay it (if I was filthy rich).
A few posts back I discussed another form of SSD that was boasting speeds of 180MBps. LSI claims these are pushing 1400MBps sustained throughput. According to LSI, you would need over 400 regular hard drives in 36U of rack space and 300 times the power to match the WarpDrive for sheer input / output. Suddenly the price tag seems a little less exorbitant. However, 400 regular hard drives would most definitely have a pile of more storage space. Storage space was not their goal here, it is strictly built for speed, and speed alone. You wouldn’t buy a Lamborghini Murciélago and expect to move a fridge across town would you?
